Draper is named after Thomas Draper who in 1922 opened up a quarry and began to do business as the McMurray Asphaltum & Oil Company.
Draper is an acreage lot development hugging the Clearwater River a few kms southeast of Fort McMurray, via the community of Waterways. Historically an area where the railway passed through, Draper is also known for its small agricultural pursuits and very active market gardens. This small, spread-out community of 84 residents, secluded by trees and the riverbank, is situated along the road.
Those living in Draper, including a few that live on the north side of the Clearwater River which they cross by boat in the summer and in vehicles during the winter, have only to travel a short distance to Fort McMurray for essential goods and services.
