Located 140 kms southeast of Fort McMurray at the confluence of the Jackfish River and Christina Lake, Conklin is a relatively isolated community, offering its 213 residents a quiet lifestyle in a closeknit community. Inhabitants of this community are mostly of Metis decent.
Secondary Highway 881 links the community to Anzac and connects to Lac La Biche further south. The community is served by both a local grass airstrip and the Leismer Airstrip 12 kms to the north.
While most goods and services come from Fort McMurray, local commercial developments include a gas bar, post office, store, and related facilities, which cater primarily to the oil and gas industry.
In addition to the Christina Lake Recreation Resort, there is also a camp, café and lounge development in Conklin. Much of the community's subdivided land base is held by the municipality; however, there are also lots under private ownership. Most residents live in single-family, owner-occupied houses. Utilities include electricity and natural gas, telephone, a local water treatment plant and delivery service. A recycling program is also in place.
Policing is provided by the rural detachment based out of Fort McMurray RCMP. Volunteers staff the fire department and all other emergency services are dispatched from Fort McMurray. Health services also make visits to the hamlet.
The local elementary school is operated by the Northland School Division, with older students bussed to Fort McMurray.
