Emergency Services

Do you know how to get in touch with emergency services in case of an emergency? Wood Buffalo has ambulance and fire services as well as RCMP to handle emergencies.

In cases of emergency when people or property are at risk, seconds count. Call 9-1-1 immediately (within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo). Remain calm and speak clearly and:

The dispatcher may ask you for other information to help assist you quickly and effectively. Remain on the line until the dispatcher tells you to hang up.

For emergency calls from outside the region, or from satellite phones, call 780-790-3912. This should only be used if the emergency is within the boundaries of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, otherwise dialing 911 will reach the nearest call answer centre.

Dialing 911 on a satellite telephone will not place your call to the nearest emergency service, but will go the satellite communications main centre where you will have to advise the operator of your location and the nearest community to provide assistance.

The Wood Buffalo Call Answering Centre receives approximately 15,000 calls annually. It dispatches for all fire and ambulance calls in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, and transfers all police request calls to the RCMP Northern Dispatch Centre. The Call Answer Centre is part of the Alberta Provincial 911 network that provides 911 services throughout the province.

Any inquiries regarding the call answer centre should be directed through the deputy chief of operations at 780-792-5500.
